During World War 1, one soldier in every six in the British Army was from India and half of all soldiers from India were from Punjab. Because of the fierce and courageous fighting style of Sikhs, and their unmatched bravery, much of the recruitment by the British focused on those from Punjab as Sikhs were often considered a martial race of warriors. ⠀ ⠀ In this image from 1914, a Sikh regiment marched into France.

On August 15th, 1947, the Partition of India and Pakistan began, which left 3 million dead and 14 million rapidly displaced. The Partition is when Sikhs left West Punjab where so much of their history occurred. Although Sikhs gave so much for a free India, at the end, the Nationalist and extremist on both sides desired a concentrated class of people on each side with little regard for Sikhs. ⠀ ⠀ Today, there are travels to Pakistan opening up with trips to many of the historical gurdwaras on that side of the border. Hopefully, one day you also can visit those precious places in our history and trace back a little of your own roots.

"Princess Sophia Duleep Singh (grand daughter of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and daughter of Maharaja Duleep Singh) led the kind of life that was possible only at a particular moment in world history, between the height and decline of the British Empire, in a world of rigid social hierarchies both in England and in India. The sheer sweep and strangeness of that life, and the cracks it exposes in British power, make Sophia a fascinating subject...⠀ ⠀ Born into displaced Punjabi royalty in England in 1876, a goddaughter of Queen Victoria, as a girl Sophia led a life of unimaginable luxury and privilege. Yet her foreign name and dark skin marked her for a future quite different from that of a typical upper-class English girl, since she would never be considered marriage material. Along with her five siblings, Sophia struggled from an early age to understand who she was, where she belonged and what on Earth she was supposed to do with her life."⠀ ⠀ Princess Sophia would rebel against the State and Queen, staking out her own claim in this world becoming a central figure in the Women's Suffragette Movement of the late 1800s and early 1900s. Her willingness to give up her life of luxury to help others is a story of inspiration and refusal to surrender to what society wishes you to be. The British Crown tried to bury our history and legacy, but they didn’t realize we are seeds.
